WWII Doolittle Raiders making final toast

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The surviving Doolittle Raiders, all in their 90s, considered their place in history for their daring World War II attack on Japan amid thousands of cheering fans, as they prepared for a final ceremonial toast Saturday to their fallen comrades.
A B-25 bomber flyover helped cap an afternoon memorial tribute in which a wreath was placed at the Doolittle Raider monument outside the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton. Museum officials estimated some 5,000 people turned out for Veterans Day weekend events honoring the 1942 mission credited with rallying American morale and throwing the Japanese off balance.
Acting Air Force Secretary Eric Fanning said America was at a low point, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and other Axis successes, before "these 80 men who showed the nation that we were nowhere near defeat." He noted that all volunteered for a mission with high risks throughout, from the launch of B-25 bombers from a carrier at sea, the attack on Tokyo and lack of fuel to reach safe bases.
Only four of the 80 are still alive. The Raiders said, at the time, they didn't realize their mission would be considered an important event in turning the war's tide. It inflicted little major damage physically, but changed Japanese strategy while firing up Americans.
"It was what you do ... over time, we've been told what effect our raid had on the war and the morale of the people," Lt. Col. Edward Saylor, 93, said in an interview.
The Brusset, Mont. native, who now lives in Puyallup, Wash., said he was one of the lucky ones.
"There were a whole bunch of guys in World War II; a lot of people didn't come back," he said.
Staff Sgt. David Thatcher, 92, of Missoula, Mont., said during the war, the raid seemed like "one of many bombing missions." The most harrowing part for him was the crash-landing of his plane, depicted in the movie "Thirty Seconds over Tokyo."
Three crew members died as Raiders bailed out or crash-landed their planes in China, but most were helped to safety by Chinese villagers and soldiers.
Three of the four surviving Raiders were greeted by flag-waving well-wishers ranging from small children to fellow war veterans. The fourth couldn't travel because of health problems.
Twelve-year-old Joseph John Castellano's grandparents brought him from their Dayton home for Saturday's events.
"This was Tokyo. The odds of their survival were one in a million," the boy said. "I just felt like I owe them a few short hours of the thousands of hours I will be on Earth."
More than 600 people, including Raiders widows and children, descendants of Chinese villagers who helped them and Pearl Harbor survivors, were expected for the invitation-only ceremony Saturday evening.
After Thomas Griffin of Cincinnati died in February at age 96, the survivors decided at the 71st anniversary reunion in April in Fort Walton, Beach, Fla., that it would be their last and that they would gather this autumn for one last toast together instead of waiting, as had been the original plan, for the last two survivors to make the toast.
"We didn't want to get a city all excited and plan and get everything set up for a reunion, and end up with no people because of our age," explained Lt. Col. Richard Cole, the oldest survivor at 98. The Dayton native, who was Doolittle's co-pilot, lives in Comfort, Texas.
Lt. Col. Robert Hite, 93, couldn't come. Son Wallace Hite said his father, wearing a Raiders blazer and other traditional garb for their reunions, made his own salute to the fallen with a silver goblet of wine at home in Nashville, Tenn., earlier in the week.
Hite is the last survivor of eight Raiders who were captured by Japanese soldiers. Three were executed; another died in captivity.
The 80 silver goblets in the ceremony were presented to the Raiders in 1959 by the city of Tucson, Ariz. The Raiders' names are engraved twice, the second upside-down. During the ceremony, white-gloved cadets pour cognac into the participants' goblets. Those of the deceased are turned upside-down.
The cognac is from 1896, the year Doolittle was born.

The test pilot legend made famous in 'The Right Stuff' talks to USA TODAY about his life.

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. – In the parking lot of this small Sierra Nevada town's airfield, a decommissioned F-104 Starfighter jet looms over a series of plaques. They honor the exploits of one Charles Elwood Yeager, better known as Chuck.
But while the display has a posthumous vibe, the local legend in question is very much alive and well, sitting in his hanger a few yards up the road.
"I'll be 90 in February, and while I'm not gonna run no marathon I still hunt and fish and fly," says Yeager, resting in the shade of a tail-dragger prop plane that he solos in regularly. Parked nearby is an old pickup whose plate reads BELL X1, the rocket plane he rode into history when it broke the sound barrier in 1947.
Living legend is an overused term, but it applies to this American original indelibly captured by Sam Shepard in 1983's The Right Stuff. Not that Yeager is remotely Hollywood. For him, life boils down to "duty, it's that simple."
The General, as he prefers to be called, doesn't particularly enjoy interviews; navel-gazing isn't his style. But he agreed to speak with USA TODAY to draw attention to the foundation that bears his name, which supports a scholarship program at Marshall University in his native West Virginia as well as the Young Eagles, a non-profit program chaired by pilot Sully Sullenberger that gets kids airborne (Yeager is Eagles' chairman emeritus).
Yeager may be in a dogfight with Father Time, but his bearing is still ramrod straight. He says his famously acute 20/10 vision remains sharp, although his ears are another matter. "I can't hear well," he growls in his iconic drawl. "Damn P-51 Mustang noise. You go sit behind that engine for eight hours, with a leather helmet on. But that's a handicap that came with the job."
Job. That three-letter-word has defined Yeager's life. And what jobs they were, from World War II combat ace to, famously, Air Force test pilot who 65 years ago broke the speed of sound in that Bell X-1, which now hangs in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
Yeager's name popped back onto the cultural radar Oct. 14, the anniversary of his first supersonic flight. On that day in New Mexico, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner made history when he jumped out of a capsule at nearly 130,000 feet and broke the speed of sound on his descent.
While some 8 million people watched Baumgartner jump live on YouTube, Yeager wasn't one of them. He was over at Nellis Air Force Base outside of Las Vegas, strapped into a borrowed F-15 fighter. He proceeded to repeat his own record flight by laying down "a big ol' sonic boom over Edwards" Air Force base in the Mojave desert, where he'd run a pilot training program a half-century ago.
Always on the go, a few days later Yeager was hunting deer with the governor of West Virginia, and a week after that he was grand marshal of the Veterans Day parade in San Diego.
"There's little question that (first) supersonic feat transcends the feelings any military officer has for their own branch," says Jack Hawkins, director of the parade in San Diego, a decidedly Navy town. "I have pride in my Marine Corps, but when you look at what Gen. Yeager has done, you have pride in America."
Often imitated, never duplicated
Yeager's place in history "is secure," says Bob van der Linden, chairman of the aeronautics department of the National Air and Space Museum, noting that Yeager laid the groundwork for a historic test pilot program that eventually trained NASA's astronauts and in the process created a legendary template.
"He became so iconic that it seemed every test pilot after him had to affect some sort of drawl, down to many commercial pilots you hear on the intercom today," says van der Linden. "He was that aw-shucks guy from the country who knew machines intimately. And while he wasn't known outside the military for a long time, The Right Stuff changed all that."

That 1979 Tom Wolfe book-turned-movie starred Shepard as a taciturn, rugged and fiercely independent maverick who respected authority but never second-guessed his gut. Those traits still define the man. A few hours in Yeager's company are a mix of history lesson and lecture.
To wit, he feels Baumgartner was merely "doing what (Col.) Joe (Kittinger, the Austrian's 84-year-old advisor) did in 1960 (from 102,000 feet), so what's he proving?" And NASA made a mistake wooing its first astronauts with "a free house (and) a cut of the goddamn Time-Life (publicity contract)."
But wouldn't the ultimate test pilot have enjoyed going into space? "Sure, but I couldn't, I only had a high school diploma," says Yeager. Couldn't the rules be relaxed? Yeager leans forward in his plastic chair: "Rules aren't for relaxing. Look, I don't cry over spilled milk. Everything I did was for duty, not for publicity."
What Yeager did in 1947 was take a volatile experimental aircraft to a speed that many were convinced would kill him. In subsonic tests that led up to the X-1's supersonic flight, the plane seemed to lose stability and be on the verge of disintegrating the closer it got to Mach 1.
Undaunted, Yeager and his chief engineer Jack Ridley pioneered the use of a "flying tail," transforming the rear horizontal stabilizer into an active part of the aircraft. "It took the British, the French and the Soviets five years to find out that little trick," he says with a laugh. "It gave us a jump on the world."
Soon everyone knew not only Yeager's name, but also his effortlessly cool persona in the face of danger. Even today, he describes the day he almost died when the X-1A spun out in 1953 as if it were just a bad day at the office.
After rising at 3 a.m. to go duck hunting, Yeager cheated death in the X-1A. "When I landed they took me to the hospital but I was OK so they let me go home,' he says. "But I had to drive to L.A. to give a speech at the Army and Navy club. Got home at 2 a.m. and went to bed. That was my day. That's the way we lived."
More than just flying
These days, Yeager's exploits still command reverence, especially among aviators. His website, chuckyeager.com, offers fans signed memorabilia, and his second wife, Victoria, 53, (first wife Glennis died of ovarian cancer in 1990) is hopeful there could be interest in making another movie about the pilot's life.
"People know about the X-1, of course, but there's so much more to him than that," says the former actress who married the general in 2003.
As the sun starts to drop in the mountain sky, Yeager is keen to return to the glorious past. More tales about risking life and limb, told with a casualness that belies the obvious danger.
Wasn't he ever afraid? "What good does it do to be afraid? It doesn't help anything," Yeager says. "You better try and figure out what's happening and correct it."
So none of his feats were heroic?
Yeager shrugs. "A lot of it was just being in the right place at the right time."
With the very right stuff.

Flying in a prop plane over the Santa Barbara mountains, turbulence hit. The plane was out of the pilot’s control. Seconds went by, and the turbulence continued. Santa Monica College student and pilot Dennis Borik regained control of his plane, but the threat of what could have been hung in the air.
This is only one of many problems encountered in the air. While last month’s crash at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport prompted questions of safety from the surrounding community, some pilots from SMC are comfortable with the current safety of the airport.
Borik, who has been flying for seven years, has not changed his idea of flying since the crash. Instead, the crash fortified his focus and attention to detail.
“It reminds everybody who is in aviation that it can happen to anybody,” he said. “It reinforces your sharpness and how careful you are about everything you do.”
Melissa Dammer, a business major at SMC, works at Santa Monica Flyers near the airport, where in exchange for work, she receives free flying lessons and eventually a pilot’s license. She said the recent crash at the airport has not influenced her feelings about flying or the safety of the airport.
“It has not deterred me from wanting to learn how to fly,” Dammer said. “Accidents with airplanes are much less common than accidents with cars.”
She admitted to the possibility of a malfunction while flying, but is comfortable with airplane maintenance at her flight school.
Dammer said she supports the airport.
“It is a shame that the city of Santa Monica does not really appreciate the airport and they don’t really care if it’s here or not,” she said.
She also said that pilots trained at the airport learn more about safety and communication than a pilot would “in the middle of Kansas” because of the high volume of air traffic. 
Borik said the airport is not beginner-friendly, citing the short runways as being difficult to land in, although he said he has never had any trouble taking off or departing.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, 40 percent of fatal airplane accidents are due to loss of control, mainly stalls. This was the leading cause of general aviation accidents from 2001 to 2011.
For David Goddard, chair of Santa Monica’s Airport Commission, which advises the city on the airport, and a member of Airport2Park, the organization wanting to turn the airport into a park, the airport does not follow proper safety measures.
“The airport does not have a runway safety area,” Goddard said. “For a 5,000-foot runway, there should be a 1,000-foot runway safety area at each end of the runway. There are houses within 300 feet of each end of the runway. If a plane goes off the end of the runway, it’s going to go into a residency.”
The Sept. 29 crash at SMO that killed four people once again raised questions from interest groups and neighbors about the safety of the airport. The plane, a Cessna Citation, was landing when it veered to the right and into a hangar, sparking a fire that produced a cloud of smoke that could be seen all over the city.
Two years ago, a prop plane crashed into a home near the airport when a student pilot lost control on his way back to the airport.
Casey Weaver, a receptionist at Justice Aviation, who is also a pilot in his free time, was at work an hour before the accident happened.
“It was pretty shocking to hear that it happened, considering that I was there an hour before the crash actually happened,” Weaver said.
Even though he was close to witnessing the accident himself, the crash has not affected his perception of flying.
Weaver said he believes that landing in the airport is more complicated for jets with more than four seats. He also added that one of the more complicated aspects is the air space that has to be shared with other planes coming in and out, with LAX being so close.
“We are trained to be prepared for such things,” he said. “It was an unfortunate accident.”

NTSB Accident report for Cessna 421 in which Hannah Luce was sole survivor

HISTORY OF FLIGHT

On July, 10, 2010, at 2205 central daylight time (CDT), a Cessna model 421/A airplane, N88DF, impacted trees and terrain following a dual loss of engine power during a visual approach to the Tulsa International Airport (TUL), Tulsa, Oklahoma. The private pilot and two pilot rated passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was owned and operated by the pilot, and the business flight was being conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 without a flight plan. The cross-country flight originated at the Oakland County International Airport (PTK), Pontiac, Michigan, and the intended destination was the Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Airport (RVS), Tulsa, Oklahoma. The airplane had requested to land at TUL prior to the accident. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident.

The pilot and both passengers departed RVS for PTK about 0919 and arrived at PTK about 1251 for a business meeting. The airplane flew at 13,500 feet mean sea level (msl), resulting in a three hour and thirty-two minute flight. Prior to departing PTK the pilot requested the fixed base operator to “top it off, but nothing in the nacelles,” and the plane was subsequently serviced with 156 gallons of 100 octane low lead (100LL) aviation fuel. A line serviceman for the fixed base operator providing the fuel observed the pilot performing a preflight inspection prior to departing PTK. During the preflight the lineman observed the right main tank sump become stuck open. He estimated that five to six gallons of fuel was lost before the sump seal was regained, but the exact amount of fuel lost could not be determined. The pilot was heard to say “Great, that’s the side that burns more fuel.” The fuel lost as a result of the fuel spill was not replaced. The airplane departed PTK for RVS about 1803 and flew the return flight at 4,500 feet msl.

At 2147:53 the pilot checked in with Tulsa Approach Control and was cleared direct RVS. At 2157:50 the pilot stated he’d like to land at TUL and was given direction to enter a left base to Runway 18 Right (18R). At 2201:44 the pilot was told to switch to the local tower control frequency, which he did at 2201:47. The pilot was given clearance to land at 2201:56. At 2204:23 the pilot stated “Tulsa, we’ve exhausted our fuel.” The airplane was observed descending into a forested area, followed by a flash. The pilot did not inform either of the approach or tower controllers he had a fuel problem at any time prior to reporting the fuel exhaustion.

PILOT INFORMATION

The pilot, age 51, held a private pilot certificate with ratings of airplane single-engine land, and airplane multi-engine land. His last biennial flight review was on November 3, 2009, and his last third class medical certificate was issued on December 22, 2009. The pilot’s logbook indicated he had accumulated about 592 total flight hours, and about 67 hours in the accident airplane at the time of the accident.

PASSENGER INFORMATION

The front-seat passenger, age 43, held a private pilot certificate with a rating of airplane single engine land. His last FAA third-class medical certificate was issued on November 21, 2001, with no limitations.

No pilot's logbook was located for the pilot-rated passenger. According to his last FAA application for medical certification, November 21, 2001, he indicated 140 total hours and 15 hours in the last six months.

AIRCRAFT INFORMATION

The airplane was a twin engine, low wing aircraft, serial number 421A0084. It was powered by two Continental GTSIO-520-D engines driving McCauley three-blade propellers. The last regularly occurring airframe inspection was an annual type on November 20, 2009, at a Hobbs time of 576.3 hours. An annual type inspection was also performed on each engine on November 20, 2009.

The airplane was configured with an eight tank fuel system. It included left and right main tanks (50 gallons usable fuel each wing), left and right auxiliary fuel tanks (35 gallons usable fuel each wing), optional auxiliary fuel tanks (13 gallons usable fuel each wing), and optional wing locker tanks (26 gallons usable fuel each wing). The left wing locker tank was placarded “INOP”, and the right wing locker tank was not used. This provided for a capacity of 196 gallons of usable fuel for the accident flight.

METEOROLOGICAL INFORMATION

Weather at TUL at 2153 was reported as 10 miles visibility, skies clear, and temperature 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds were calm.

WRECKAGE AND IMPACT INFORMATION

The airplane impacted trees and terrain about ½ mile north of TUL on the extended centerline of Runway 18R in Mohawk Park, property operated by the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The aircraft struck 50 to 60 foot tall trees on an approximate 180 degree magnetic heading. The debris field was approximately 200 feet long and 75 feet wide. The right main fuel tank was impact damaged, separated from the wing, and found near the base of the first tree strike. The fuselage came to rest inverted 200’ to the south of the first tree strike.

The wings remained attached to the fuselage. The empennage was separated from the tailcone approximately 3 feet forward of the horizontal stabilizer leading edge. The engines remained attached to the wing by fragmented engine mount structure, control cables, hoses, wiring, and tubing. The left main gear was separated from the wings. The nose of the aircraft separated at the forward pressure bulkhead. A post-impact fire damaged the right wing, right engine cowling, right locker and locker tank structure.

The right locker fuel tank was breached at the impact site and did not contain fuel. The left locker tank was placarded as “INOP” and not fueled for the flight. It was not breached and did not contain fuel. The main tanks were fragmented and separated from the wings due to tree impact. The outboard 13 gallon bladder style auxiliary tanks were breached by tree impact. No fuel contamination signatures were observed in the trees or ground vegetation in the wreckage path or debris field. The left outboard auxiliary tank did not contain fuel; and the right outboard auxiliary tank burned. The left inboard 35 gallon auxiliary tank was intact and did not contain fuel. The right inboard 35 gallon auxiliary tank was burned. It could not be determined if had been breached before the post-impact fire destroyed it.

The right propeller was found separated from the engine at the accident site. The blades remained secured in the propeller hub in the feathered position. One blade was unremarkable. The two other blades were bent aft approximately 15 degrees in small radius bends starting approximately 10 inches from the hub. No leading edge impact damage or signatures indicative of rotation were noted to the right propeller.

The left propeller remained attached to the left engine. All blades remained secured in the propeller hub in the feathered position. None of the blades on the left propeller displayed leading edge impact or rotational signatures.

The left engine was examined and continuity was verified by rotating the propeller flange by hand. Suction and compression were also verified at each cylinder. Cylinder numbers 1, 3, 5, 4, and 6 rocker arms exhibited continuity when the crankshaft was partially rotated by hand at the crankshaft flange. Cylinder no. 2 push rods exhibited damage. Both left and right magnetos were inspected for internal foreign object debris, which none was detected. Both left and right magneto breaker cover vents were clear of obstructions. Both left and right magneto drive shafts rotated freely when turned by hand. A cotter pin was observed on the magneto drive shafts, which were intact. A blue spark was observed at all ignition leads when the magneto drive shafts were turned by hand. No anomalies were noted with the left engine that would have prevented normal operation.

The right engine was examined and continuity was verified by rotating the propeller flange by hand. Suction and compression were verified at each cylinder and all cylinder rocker arms exhibited continuity when the crankshaft was partially rotated by hand at the crankshaft flange. Cylinder no. 2 push rods exhibited damage. Both left and right magnetos were inspected for internal foreign object debris, which none was detected. Both left and right magneto breaker cover vents were clear of obstructions. Both left and right magneto drive shafts rotated freely when turned by hand. A cotter pin was observed on the magneto drive shafts, which were intact. A blue spark was observed at all ignition leads when the magneto drive shafts were turned by hand. No anomalies were noted with the right engine that would have prevented normal operation.

TESTS AND RESEARCH

A Garmin GPSMAP 696 portable Global Positioning System (GPS) unit was recovered from the accident scene and sent to the NTSB recorder’s laboratory for download. The data for the accident flight was recovered. The recovered data showed the airplane flew a mostly straight flight from PTK towards RVS at about 4,500 feet mean sea level until the pilot requested to land at TUL. The data after 2150 was consistent with the airplane maneuvering from northeast of TUL to land on runway 18R at TUL. The flight path also depicted the airplane flying a minimum of one mile further distance to reach Runway 18R than if the airplane had proceeded directly to Runway 18L at TUL when the pilot first requested to divert to TUL when the airplane was northeast of TUL.

Two Electronic International UBG-16 panel mounted gauges, one for each installed engine, were sent to the NTSB vehicles recorder laboratory to attempt to recover flight data from the accident flight. It was determined these devices did not have the capability to retain data, and therefore did not contain recorded data from the accident flight.

One Shadin Avionics Digiflo-L™ fuel flow indicator was sent to the NTSB vehicles recorder laboratory to attempt to recover flight data from the accident flight. The Digiflo-L™ contains non-volatile memory that retains setup information, fuel remaining and fuel used information, if power is removed from the unit. Data was recovered from the unit that indicated for the accident flight the Full Fuel setting was 196 gallons, Fuel Used was 170.8 gallons, and fuel remaining (based on the manually set Full Fuel setting) was 25.1 gallons.

MEDICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL INFORMATION

The Office of the Chief Medical Investigator, Board of Medicolegal Investigations, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, performed an autopsy on the pilot on July 11, 2010. The cause of death was attributed to internal injuries due to blunt force trauma.

The FAA, Toxicology Accident Research Laboratory, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, conducted toxicological testing on the pilot. Testing for carbon monoxide and cyanide were negative. The following Volatiles and Drugs were detected:

- 22 (ug/ml, ug/g) acetomenophine detected in urine
- 0.082 Cyclobenzaprine detected in blood
- Cyclobenzaprine detected in urine
- 0.07 (ug/ml, ug/g) Diphenhydramine detected in blood
- Diphenhydramine detected in urine
- Ibuprofen detected in urine
- 0.291 (ug’ml, ug/g) Phentermine detected in blood
- Phentermine detected in urine

Cyclobenzaprine is a prescription tricyclic muscle relaxant and carries this warning: “Warnings - may impair mental and/or physical ability required for the performance of potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving, operating heavy machinery).” Diphenhydramine, also known by the trade name Benadryl, is a sedating antihistamine available over the counter; and it is also the active ingredient in most over the counter sleep aids. It carries the identical warning and is known to impair the performance of drivers at routine doses. Phentermine is a medication that reduces hunger and is used as an aid to weight loss, but is chemically a stimulant similar to amphetamine. Phentermine is not a medication approved for use among pilots by the Federal Aviation Administration.

- Dextrorphan detected in urine
- Dextrorphan not detected in blood

According to the NTSB Medical Officer, Dextrorphan is a component in many over-the-counter cough medicines and is not considered impairing.

GALVESTON — Two people were killed when a vintage World War II fighter plane crashed in West Galveston Bay Wednesday (Oct. 23), officials report.
Known as the “Galveston Gal”, the historic P51 Mustang was based at the Lone Star Flight Museum.in Galveston. The pilot and one passenger were onboard when the aircraft reportedly took off from Scholes International Airport in Galveston shortly before crashing.
A witness on a fishing charter boat called for help after the plane was seen going down in the water between Galveston Bay and Chocolate Bay.
The Coast Guard launched a search and located wreckage from the crash roughly 13 miles southwest of the Galveston airport in Galveston Bay about an hour later.
The names of the victims have not been released.
